Mayar’s Story
Mayar, a 10-year-old girl from Gaza, was caught in a devastating explosion that left her with life-threatening injuries. Mayar’s physical and psychological injuries are extensive: she has lost all her hair, experienced severe damage to her hearing and eyesight, and suffered traumatic injuries to her head that required multiple surgeries.
Mayar’s condition included a Craniopharyngioma, which required the placement of a shunt to alleviate acute symptoms. While she is now receiving treatment in Qatar, she continues to face challenges, including the need for several surgeries and medical devices. Mayar is undergoing operations to remove screws from her head as well as needing a hair transplant, a dental implant, plastic surgery, and an ear device to address her hearing issues.
Psychologically, Mayar is struggling to cope with the trauma of the explosion, and she also needs support to help her navigate the emotional toll of her injuries and displacement. Her mental health is just as critical as her physical recovery. Despite Mayar showing signs of improvement, due to the severity of her condition, there is still a high risk of further deterioration.
Relief Across Borders has mobilised to provide essential support to Mayar and her family throughout her recovery process and are coordinating psychological support to help Mayar cope with the trauma she has endured along with aid to support her family during this time.
